Over the past two weeks, our community has been subjected to an ongoing series of threatening and harassing messages. These messages have been posted on websites and been e-mailed to a few individuals across campus. The messages have been disruptive to our community and have resulted in understandable concern for our safety and security.

2010 General Assembly summary

The 2010 General Assembly adjourned March 14, one day later than scheduled, after grappling with the greatest decline in state revenues since World War II that necessitated serious budget reductions in all areas of state government. In the end, the General Assembly was able to protect higher education from reductions beyond those presented in former Gov. Tim Kaine's introduced budget, and also to provide some good news for state employees with respect to furloughs, benefits, and compensation.

Virginia Tech is taking a significant step toward establishing a new campus overseas through the execution of an agreement with a large private sector group. The proposed Virginia Tech, India campus will be located on at least 30 acres in the state of Tamil Nadu in southeast India initially encompassing a 70,000-square-foot campus facility. Master's and Ph.D. programs are planned for approximately 300 students in engineering and the sciences.

Compounds developed by researchers at Virginia Tech, have proven effective in destroying breast cancer cells when used with lasers developed by Theralase Technologies (TSX-V: TLT) out of Toronto. Theralase, an international manufacturer of laser medical devices, reports that its patented photodynamic compounds (PDCs) developed at the university, when used with its lasers, destroy breast cancer cells in pre-clinical trials.

Virginia Bioinformatics Institute researchers have discovered how pathogen proteins enter the cells of plants and animals. Due to inclement weather conditions, Virginia Tech will close all offices at 3:30 p.m.. Classes on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg will be canceled beginning at 3:30 p.m., on Thursday, Jan. 14. Canceled classes will not be rescheduled and all university events scheduled this evening have been canceled. University staff designated emergency personnel must report as instructed by their supervisor.
